Preface

In June 1992, Matt was born in Stamford, Connecticut. His brain grew rapidly. Around the age of 1 or 2, Matt asked his family, “Is there any food available to eat?” and loudly notified a lady at Old Navy she was fat. Matt played video games as soon as he could hold a controller. In 2014, he graduated from Carnegie Mellon with a double-major in Statistics and Ethics, History & Public Policy. At some point, he learned to parallel park.

Small Matt would have never believed he would one day meet a girl who owned nearly every important Nintendo video game and accessory he had not yet collected.

In August 1992 Jane was born in China. As a baby she often sat in the middle of the living room floor while deep in thought. No one knew why. She moved to England, Wisconsin, and Florida. In 2014, Jane graduated from Cornell in Civil Engineering and began a PhD at Stanford. To prevent her social skills from deteriorating further, she dropped out in 2016 and moved to Manhattan only to disastrously fail her final round MBB interview. She also knows how to drive.

Matt & Jane met in 2017 at a seemingly arbitrary job in the middle of nowhere, New Jersey.

In 2021, Matt texted Jane announcing he had moved two subway stops away from West 16th Street…

Throughout the next year, Jane received more and more invitations, phone calls, and visits from a Matt who she had never seen so happy. He always showed up armed with excuses to read books, write articles, play video games, and explore New York together. They became best friends.

On his 30th birthday, Matt kissed Jane and confidently told her they would be together forever. Two weeks later, Matt handed Jane a card:

Dear Jane,

We are very lucky, but it’s not all that. We worked very hard to put ourselves in a position to benefit from good luck. Now it’s time to share the next chapter of my life with you. I’m completely ready and couldn’t be more excited.

I want you to keep communicating with me and telling me how you feel. It’s the only way to make this last. I’ll be sure to do the same.

Matt introduced Jane to his family. Everyone impressed Jane with their kindness, intelligence, and character.

This year, Matt took Jane to the New York Public Library and proposed. When they moved into Jane’s apartment in Midtown West, their video game collection became better than ever.
